Although baggy eyelids can occur at any age, this condition is usually the result of aging. Corrective eyelid surgery is generally performed in patients aged 35 and older. EYELID LIFT SURGERY

During the procedure the surgeon makes an elliptical incision in the crease of the upper eyelid. Excess skin is removed, exposing the underlying muscle. A strip of muscle several millimeters thick is then removed to help define the eyelid crease after surgery.

The surgeon then penetrates the orbital septum to expose fat pads, three on the lower eyelids, two on the upper eyelid. A small amount of fat is removed from each pad and the skin incisions are closed with a single layer of sutures.

THE BEST CANDIDATES FOR EYELID LIFT SURGERY

The best candidates are those with positive and realistic outlook and expectations, preferably adult men or women – non-smokers who seek to improve their upper and/or lower eyelids because of having puffy upper eyelids, excessive upper eyelid skin, or tired looking eyes.

AFTER EYELID SURGERY

It is useful to apply a cold compress that brings pain relief and it also facilitates blepharoedema and bleeding.

In the first five days it is vital to sleep with two or three extra pillows to keep your head above the chest level. The patient should avoid bending over lasting for longer time. It is also recommended not to lift heavy objects.

In the early post surgery period, lagophthalmus (Hare’s eye) or ectropion (turning out of an eyelid) may occur. Activities that may dry up your eyes are also forbidden, they comprise watching TV, reading, using a computer or wearing contact lenses.

PRECONDITIONS AND RISKS

Eyelid lift surgery is a relatively safe and effective surgery and the vast majority of patients undergoing this type of plastic surgery are pleased with the results.

In general, the real complications are quite rare in experienced hands. The common complications of the blepharoplasty include slight dryness of the eye, conjunctivitis, protracted swelling, or chemosis, excessive ecchymosis, or perhaps more disturbing, conjunctival ecchymosis, which may take 2 to 3 weeks to disappear.

Somewhat less likely complications are infection, hematomas, wound dehiscence, dry eye syndrome, hypertrofic scars and keloid, epiphora, protracted hyperpigmentation of lower lid and residual bags, assymetry, hollow lower eyelid and eyelid ptosis.
