Breast reduction, technically known as mammoplasty, is a surgical technique that reduces the breast size, achieving a smaller and firmer breast in proportion to the rest of the body. Apart from aesthetic considerations, breast reduction surgery may also relieve related physical problems, such as backache, neck ache and even psychological problems that can affect personal relationships. The operation is often combined with a breast lift (mastopexy), to achieve the best result for the patient. A breast lift is a surgical technique, consisting of lifting and improving the existing shape of the breast. Pregnancy and the natural ageing process often affect the firmness of the breast; mastoplexy is an ideal technique to reverse this process.

THE BEST CANDIDATES FOR BREAST REDUCTION

Breast reduction can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence, but it won't necessarily change your looks to match your ideal, or cause other people to treat you differently. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with your surgeon. The best candidates for breast augmentation are women who are looking for improvement, not perfection, in the way they look. If you're physically healthy and realistic in your expectations, you may be a good candidate.

THE SURGERY

The surgeon removes excess skin, fat and mammary tissue, relocating the areaola (the coloured area around the nipple) and the nipple itself into their new position. In order to achieve the desired shape, the surgeon makes anchor-like incisions, creating a vertical line downwards from the areola and the horizontal line beneath breast. The areola, its blood vessels and nerves are repositioned together in most cases. However, in significant reductions, it is usually necessary to separate the areola totally and relocate it. The size of the areola can also be reduced, if necessary. The plastic surgeon will make the decision as to the most appropriate technique to use.

AFTER YOUR SURGERY

The patient will usually remain at the clinic for about 24 hours and will wear a compression bandage, which is removed after one week and substituted by a special support bra. The stiches are removed at this time, with any discomfort controlled with medication prescribed by the surgeon.

GETTING BACK TO NORMAL

After 1-2 weeks, the patient can return to everyday activities, avoiding strong physical efforts. It may take 6 months to a year for breasts to settle into their new shape, but swelling and bruising will disappear in the first few weeks. Back to work (if not too strenuous) and social activities: about 2 weeks.

PRECONDITIONS AND RISKS

We minimize risks and complications by selecting patients carefully and always having the most skilled surgeons, physicians and nurses carry out procedures. However, despite the highest standards, complications can occur. They are rare, and most patients will not have complications, but if you have concerns about possible complications, please discuss these with your doctor.

Please read the preconditions and risks page before embarking on any surgery.
