The tummy tuck, also known as Abdominoplasty is used to flatten the abdomen by surgically removing unwanted overhanging excess skin and to tighten the abdominal wall muscles of the protruding abdomen, resulting in a smoother, tighter and slimmer new you. When you are deciding for a tummy tuck, you need to remember, it is a major surgery performed under general anaesthetic which will leave a permanent scar.

To create even slimmer waist, the tummy tuck surgery is very often performed in combination with liposuction.

► TUMMY TUCK SURGERY

The tummy tuck procedure could be either a partial or a complete procedure.

The Complete Tummy Tuck (Full Tummy Tuck)

The Complete Tummy Tuck surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and takes up to three hours to complete.  The surgeon makes one long incision in the crease of the skin under your lower abdomen and second incision to free the navel.  Next, the surgeon lifts the excess skin to access the abdominal muscles, pulls them together and stitches them into their new position to create a firmer abdominal wall.  All excess skin is then removed and a new navel created. The incisions are then stitched together to achieve a slender waistline.

The Partial Tummy Tuck (Mini Tummy Tuck)

The Partial Tummy Tuck surgery is used where the abdominal muscles repair is not necessary. It is also performed under general anaesthetic and usually takes up to 2 hours to complete. The navel is not repositioned and generally a smaller incision is made just over the pubic area. The skin is then pulled down, excess removed and then stitched back together.

► BENEFITS OF HAVING A TUMMY TUCK

  • Achieving the shape you have always wanted.
  • An improvement in self-confidence.
  • The possibility to wear fitted clothes you previously would not consider wearing.
  • The ability to do the activities your tummy used to prevent you from doing.

► THE BEST CANDIDATES FOR TUMMY TUCK

The ideal candidates for the tummy tuck are both men and women who cannot get rid of the loose excess skin and the bulk of abdominal fat by the usual means of a healthy diet and regular exercise. It is the correct choice and often the last step in achieving the body they desire particularly for those men and women who have lost significant amount of weight and have been left with too much excess skin, causing them discomfort and issues with self-confidence.

The other best possible candidates are post-pregnancy women who have had the skin and abdominal muscles stretched and damaged beyond the point of being able to attain their previous body shape.

Abdominoplasty can be also the answer for those men and women for whom the aging process is preventing them from keeping their abdomen slender and firm, and are in need of intervention by our skilled cosmetic surgeons.

► AFTER YOUR TUMMY TUCK SURGERY

It is to be expected that you may experience some pain and discomfort immediately after the surgery. The pain can be relieved with pain-relief medication.  There will be also some bruising and swelling around the treated area which should subside within several days.

Even though you might feel a little bit sore, you will be encouraged to walk around as soon as possible. You will be provided with a supportive elastic garment to wear, which is advised to keep the wound dry and clean to prevent infection and you will be given instructions on aftercare by our medical staff.

The stitches from around your navel will be removed on the 10th or 14th day after the surgery, any internal stitches are dissolvable and will, in time, be absorbed by your body (up to 90 days).  Depending on the extent of the surgery, you might be discharged on the next day or stay in the hospital for two to three days.

► GETTING BACK TO NORMAL AFTER TUMMY TUCK

Enduring the initial discomfort, you should start to see the first results of your surgery after about two weeks into the recovery. However, some people find it takes several weeks or even few months to recover completely and enjoy the final result.

You will need to take at least two weeks off of work, but some patients need a couple of more weeks to ensure proper recovery, especially if the surgery was extensive.

The tummy tuck is an invasive surgery and you need to take the recuperation seriously, just like after C section, or other invasive surgery. Don't put too much strain on yourself and follow the medical advice down to the letter.  All strenuous activity and vigorous exercise should be avoided for at least six weeks, however light exercise about two weeks after the surgery will help you to recuperate faster.

► YOUR NEW LOOK AFTER TUMMY TUCK

One thing Tummy tuck is not, is a weight loss surgery.

If you have realistic expectations, you will like, embrace and enjoy the new shape of your abdomen.

You are going to feel confident in wearing what you once considered impossible and you will no longer feel the need to hide behind baggy clothes.  Even the permanent scar will go undetected under a bikini.

You will have boost in self-esteem and finally "feel good in your own skin".

In order to maintain your new body shape and the feeling of accomplishment, you should try to stay away from your vices and adapt to a healthy lifestyle, exercise regularly, and follow a balanced diet.
