Eyelid Lift Surgery
The Eyelid lift surgery origins go back to the tenth century. The word blepharoplasty was first mentioned in Europe by a surgeon named von Graefe in 1818. After this, a large number of surgeons began to develop new techniques for aesthetic eyelid surgery.
Up to 1940, these procedures involved only the excision of skin. As a great philosopher once said, the eyes are the windows to the soul. They can also be the windows to our age.
Upper eyelids generally begin to sag by third decade, although some teens already have extra fat and skin on their upper lids. In forties, the sagging can worsen, and eyelid wrinkles can begin to form. Meanwhile, puffy bags may emerge under the lower lids. This can have one, or more causes.
Over time, the eyelid skin thins and muscles become stretched and become increasingly susceptible to the force of gravity. The orbital septum weakens due to age, or heredity, the fat protrudes, forming bags. These changes make the eyes look smaller, the face look older and cause one to protect an image of chronic fatigue.
Although baggy eyelids can occur at any age, this condition is usually the result of aging. Corrective eyelid surgery is generally performed in patients aged 35 and older. Eyelid surgery is the most highly refined and also the most frequently requested procedure in the area of aesthetic facial surgery. Blepharoplasty can be done alone, or in conjunction with other facial surgery procedures such as a facelift or browlift.

► EYELID LIFT SURGERY
During the procedure the surgeon makes an elliptical incision in the crease of the upper eyelid. Excess skin is removed, exposing the underlying muscle. A strip of muscle several millimeters thick is then removed to help define the eyelid crease after surgery.
The surgeon then penetrates the orbital septum to expose fat pads, three on the lower eyelids, two on the upper eyelid. A small amount of fat is removed from each pad and the skin incisions are closed with a single layer of sutures.
► THE BEST CANDIDATES FOR EYELID LIFT SURGERY
The best candidates are those with positive and realistic outlook and expectations, preferably adult men or women – non-smokers who seek to improve their upper and/or lower eyelids because of having puffy upper eyelids, excessive upper eyelid skin, or tired looking eyes.
The patients are expected to have healthy facial muscles and tissue. The patients should not suffer from any life-threatening illness or medical condition.
► AFTER EYELID SURGERY
It is useful to apply a cold compress that brings pain relief and it also facilitates blepharoedema and bleeding.
In the first five days it is vital to sleep with two or three extra pillows to keep your head above the chest level. The patient should avoid bending over lasting for longer time. It is also recommended not to lift heavy objects.
In the early post surgery period, lagophthalmus (Hare’s eye) or ectropion (turning out of an eyelid) may occur. Activities that may dry up your eyes are also forbidden, they comprise watching TV, reading, using a computer or wearing contact lenses.
► YOUR NEW LOOK
Eyelid lift procedure achieves a dramatic aesthetic effect with a modest investment of surgical effort. Moreover, it enjoys a high degree of acceptance among patients.
The excess skin from the upper eyelid will be removed and fine lines and wrinkles will be corrected. The bags beneath the eyes will disappear and the droopiness will vanish as well.
More importantly, your confidence and self-esteem will be enhanced and you will enjoy your new vibrant appearance. For many people, the results are permanent.
► GETTING BACK TO NORMAL
During recovery period your eye area will be bruised and swollen with red eyes in the first few days, which is normal. It will take few weeks until your eyes finish the healing process and you should not wear any eye make up within this period of time.
Most patients are 90% back to normal time within two weeks. Majority of patients are ready to appear in public in a week to 10 days. You might be then sensitive to some irritants such as wind or sunlight, so we highly recommend wearing sunglasses.
Rigorous sports, and certain movements such as bending and lifting should be postponed because they raise the blood pressure.
