There are several types of breast implants. Nowadays there are three types of breast implants available and these are subsequently divided into various sections according to their dimensions such as shape, size and profile.

Breast Implant filling types

The most important factor when considering the breast implants is the filling based on which the implants differ in material and consistency. We distinguish three kinds of filling:

  1. Saline breast implants
  2. Silicone breast implants
  3. Alternative composition breast implants

Saline breast implants

These breast implants are filled with sterile saline solution. The shell of the breast implant is made of elastic silicone and can absorb different volumes of saline solution. The volume of saline solution gives the breast expected size and shape.

Saline breast implants benefit from the necessity of a smaller surgery incision comparing to silicone breast implants and in case of rupturing, the client’s body naturally absorbs the saline solution which is non-toxic.

The rupture is very easy to detect as the implant deflects, however, the rupture rate is low. The main drawback is the higher risk of rippling in case the implants are not positioned under sufficient breast tissue or behind the chest muscle.

Silicone breast implants

These implants consist of silicone shell which is filled with silicone gel. These implants have developed a lot since they were first used. They are less likely to rupture and thus are safer than in past.

The main disadvantage of silicone breast implants is necessity of larger surgery incision in order to be able to insert a full sized implant. This increases the risk of scarring. On the other hand, there is a lower risk of rippling.

In case the silicone implant ruptures, it does not collapse and the gel may remain in the shell, or may leak into the breast implant pocket. Once it gets ruptured, it is not easy to detect, only via MRI or ultrasound screening.

Therefore, silicone breast implants require regular check-ups to see the implants function properly.  Silicone breast implants feel more like natural breast and look more natural than the saline breast implants.

Alternative composition breast implants

There are various alternative breast implants based on the type of filling and coating, these include hydrogel breast implants, soya bean oil breast implants or titanium coated breast implants to name but a few.

All of them are not recommended for breast augmentation as their safety and health impacts have not been investigated in details and are not known.

Types of breast implant dimensions

Considering the dimensional characteristics of breast implants is an important factor in determining the most suitable type of implants for every woman. Two main categories are distinguished.

  1. Round
  2. Anatomical / teardrop

Round breast implants

Round implants provide traditional design in breast augmentation and remain the ideal choice for such a procedure. These implants represent a great variety of dimensions and degrees of projection and this fact results in variety of fitting of the implant.

Round implants make up soft, circular and balanced proportioned breasts. They imitate a natural breast in motion and distribution of the gel inside the breast.

Anatomical / Teardrop

These implants, often called “form-stable” or “gummy bear” implants, maintain their shape. The silicone gel is thicker than in the round implants. A wide variety of teardrop shapes is available to suit the particular needs of every client.

Some are of “tall” oval shape, others are in the shape of “wide” ovals. These implants excel in emphasizing a certain area of the breast, filling it in the desired dimension.

Both of the breast implants possess three main measurements:

  • Diameter
  • Projection or profile
  • Volume or size

Selecting the most appropriate breast implant is a complicated and demanding process. Therefore, we and our experienced surgeons are here for you to advise and consult all possibilities so that you can make the best informed decision.
