The first ear correction that used surgical techniques to pin down protruding ear for cosmetic reasons was carried in the end of the 19th century. Otoplasty can be either cosmetic or reconstructive surgery. It is used to correct deformities and make them look better.

EAR CORRECTION SURGERY
The operation is carried out under local anesthesia which is injected from the back side of the ear lobe. In total, there are 3-4 incisions on one ear lobe. Within 2-5 minutes is the place numb in such a way that the procedure can be performed painlessly.
The incision is carried out on the back side so that it won´t be visible. The length of the incision is about 5-6 cm. The skin incision is important to get access to the cartilage of the auricle which may be trimmed, reshaped and pinned back with permanent sutures to secure the cartilage.
In different case, the surgeon will not remove any cartilage, but might use stitches to reshape the cartilage permanently. The scars are well concealed behind the aer and fade away well. The dressing plays an important role in achieving fine modeling of the ear and ensuring recovery without complications.
For this reason, a gauze strip impregnated with antibiotic ointment is packed exactly the reshaped anatomical structures of the ear.

No pressure of any kind may be put on the ear here, the soaked pad must be pressed uniformly. The external ear canal should be protected by a small ear plug. In addition, retroauricular incision area must be modeled to create an abutment which will support the contours on the ventral side of the auricle. The ear is the very gently squeezed with a moist compress and modeled again.
A notched ear compress is then put in place as cushioning and a second compress is placed light on top of it. Finally, a zinc oxide head dessing is applied.

AFTER EAR CORRECTION SURGERY
The head dressing is left in place for 8 days. During this time the patient takes antibiotics orally as protection against a possible infection. If the patient experiences pain or throbbing in his or her ear, the surgeon should be notified immediately.
YOUR NEW LOOK
After dressing removal you will see the results immediately, mainly the difference in the shape of the ear. In general, a very pleasing result is produced. The protruding ears are moved closer to the side of the head. Some patients alter their hair style to show off their new ears and smile more. Overall, patients and their families enjoy the new look and are happy with the results.
GETTING BACK TO NORMAL
After 8 days the head dressing is taken off and the sutures are removed. After the sutures are removed, the patient should still wear a ski-type head band at night for 4 weeks and avoid possible trauma to the ear during the day.
The patient should shampoo his or her hair very carefully, taking care not to bend the ear or otherwise tamper with the wound. The patient should be careful about the sports for about 3 months after the operation. Complete healing takes about 6 months.

WHAT TO CONSIDER BEFORE THE OTOPLASTY
If you were born with overly prominent ear that stick out and grow as you get older, or your ear and disproportionate to other facial features, you should consider the otoplasty to restore symmetry and create the right balance.
You should be aware of the fact that the ear pinning surgery is highly individualized procedure with the best outcome achieved through the consultations with your surgeon. Exact symmetry is not very likely as is it with the natural ears. The position of your ear after the operation will not completely match and this is just normal. Smokers must stop smoking prior to surgery since they are at increased risk of complications.
PRECONDITIONS AND RISKS
