Slovakia is a member state of the European Union since 2004. Slovakia offers the visitor a varied and enchanting country. It is country with a rich cultural and historical heritage, and is recognized as such by the UNESCO-protected sites. Many fortified castles, constructed during different historical eras, are located in exceptionally beautiful sites, most of which have been restored. Each city contains museums which allow visitors to discover Slovakia`s cultural treasures, unique thanks to folklore which is still alive today. These museums record the many historical developments which have changed Europe through the ages. The wonderful natural beauty of the country is however the most striking thing to the casual visitor.

Slovakia, while only small in size, is richly endowed with tourist attractions. In its terrain and in the variety of its tourist attractions, Slovakia is similar to Switzerland and Austria. Slovakia, is also well-known for its spa towns. The best-known of them, Piestany, attracts visitors from all over Europe and internationally. Kosice is a city with an eventful and illustrious past, its earliest recorded mention dating from 1230, when it is referred to as "Villa Cassa". The coat of arms is the oldest in Europe, a fact attested to by a letter dated 1369. The city's historic sights - from various eras - are concentrated in the historic centre, which is an Urban Heritage Area. The reconstructed main street, lined by burgher houses and palaces, offers visitors a pleasant stroll and is also the venue for major events in the life of the city.

St. Elizabeth's Cathedral, considered to be one of the most beautiful Gothic structures in the world, was built between 1378 and 1508 and is the city's oldest architectural landmark. Particularly imposing is the main altar with its three oversize statues and forty-eight panel paintings, while the lateral altars, Gothic wall paintings and sculptures add to the charm. Inside of the rich cathedral it attracts to the attention the main altar of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, dating from 1474-77, is a Late-Gothic polyptych, it is unique in Europe as it contains the largest amount of panel paintings-48 altogether-on one altar.
